Chickadees are small-sized birds from North America. They belong to the tit family. The crown of their heads and the patches on their throat are darker than the rest of their bodies.

Their name originates from the special call they produce, which sounds something like: “chick-a-dee-dee-dee”. If more than three “dee” sounds are heard, that usually means that the bird was frightened by something or someone.

Chickadees are up to 14cm in size.

Their activities are at their peak in cool weather. In the summer, these birds can be seen in deep forests. Humans don’t scare them and they are easily tamed.

The chicks grow fast, and when they are just 12 days old, they look like grown chickadees and are the same size. They leave the nest when they are 16 days old.

They are non-migratory birds. They often gather in flocks.

These birds are omnivorous. They usually feed on insects like caterpillars and insect eggs.

They are very adaptable and can be considered scavengers. They are seen feeding of dead skunks, fish or deer, and other dead animals. They eat various plants as well, like seeds, honeysuckle or blackberries. They frequently visit the feeders people leave for birds during the winter.

They are also known to stash their excess of food in different places, such as dead leaves or in hollow trees.

These birds are considered cute because of the way they look, their curiosity, and their relationships with humans. They are a combination of black, white and grey.

Both the male and the female participate in building their nests. They don’t use their old ones. They have up to eight eggs per one clutch, and they usually raise up to two broods every year.

Chickadees produce different sounds to communicate with each other.
